Chuck Hartlieb

First of all, congratulations to one big, burly good guy.

Hall of Famer? Yes. I don't care that he was never "one of the best 2 or 3 players in the game." or that "he played in a watered-down era." If you are not going to put a guy with 600+ home runs and only a small scent of steroids in the Hall of Fame, close down the Hall of Fame.

So, this is the guy that is going to lead the Jets to the Super Bowl. Right.

What in the hell is going on here? My man, Sanchy, has tight white pants on, a tank top, and a jacket that it appears one would wear to the North Pole. And this guy wanted to fight Rex Ryan? Right. That would have been like a rooster taking on a Ford.

At least Sanch isn't sporting these. Though he should...

Hey, big news for my Bucs. Here's hoping that he does not end up like Bryan Bullington, Chad Hermansen, Brad Eldred, etc., etc...

My yearly salary is not helping Philadelphia reach this list.

Good stuff
from my man, Bryan Burwell. You know what A&M? You and your football program that has been nothing since R.C. Slocum was fired, you can go to the SEC and fade into bolivian.

Speaking of Mike, none of these ever get old...

If you see Jim Gray walking towards you with a microphone, run...

Boom. Owned. When it takes things like this fight/interview to get boxing in the news, it unfortunately shows how deep in a hole boxing is.

I will try to avoid any low blows in releasing #15-11 in the MTA Poll.

15.) Arizona State- If there is a team in the country that reminds me of last year's Auburn team, it may be the Sun Devils. A team that traditionally falls short of grabbing the brass ring rides an unheralded but electrifying QB and an ace defender all the way to National Title contention.

That quarterback is Brock Osweiler. 6'8", 235 lbs. Yep, he's huge. After taking over for Steven Threet in the final 2 games of 2010, Osweiler led the pitchfork to 55 points against UCLA and a huge win over rival Arizona, on the road. Leading rusher Cameron Marshall returns, as do 7 players who caught over 20 passes, last season. Oh, and all 5 guys return on the O-Line. Basically, Jake "the snake" Plummer would be proud of this Offense.

Arizona State also returns 6 of their top 7 tacklers from last season, Led by All-American candidate, LB Vontaze Burfict. Burfict plays with an edge and an attitude that he may need to bridle, a bit. LB Brandon Magee is a great compliment to Burfict, but much of the success of the linebackers may depend on the development of the interior defensive line, where DTs Bo Moos and William Sutton will be saddled with the responsibility of gobbling up blockers while Burfict and Magee run to the ball. DE Junior Onyeali was a freshman All-American. The Sun Devils may need a great pass rush with uncertainty in the secondary, where position changes and an injury to CB Omar Bolden have caused great apprehension.

While I don't think that ASU will escape a two week grind of at Utah, then at Oregon, not to mention non-conference games against Mizzou and Illinois, the success of this season should be more than enough to save Dennis Erickson's job...at least for a year or two. With Southern Cal being ineligible to play in the Pac-12 title game, and Utah still needing to adjust to the new conference, pencil in the pitchfork to be playing December 2. Then use that pencil to get these girls' numbers.

Yes!

Last Year: 6-6 (No Bowl)

Key Losses: WR Kerry Taylor, S Max Tabach

Key Returnees: QB Brock Osweiler, LB Vontaze Burfict

Key Game: September 24 v. Southern Cal

Prediction: 10-3 (Alamo Bowl)

14.) South Carolina- Finally after years of underachieving and disappointing, this may finally be the year of the chicken. The Gamecocks took the first step, last year, winning the SEC East. While the division was subpar, the Carolina program overcame a huge barrier, psychologically just by getting to the SEC Title Game. Now, they are looking for more, and based on the quality of athlete Steve has brought in, who can blame them? Carolina is coming to the National Title party with the strut of a Spurrier Gators team circa 1996.

There are few better RB-WR combinations in the country than the Gamecocks 1-2 punch of RB Marcus Lattimore and WR Alshon Jeffrey. But the well-documented offseason issues of QB Stephen Garcia are definitely reason for concern. As is the way last season ended with uninspiring performances in the SEC Championship game (56-17 loss to Auburn) and Chick-fil-A Bowl against Florida State (26-17 loss). A win in either of those games, and you would likely have seen USC in the national top 10 to start the season.

Though the 'Cocks may not start there, they may end there with the #1 recruit in the country DE Jadeveon Clowney and DT Travian Robertson playing on the other side of the line of scrimmage. Did we mention LB Shaq Wilson, and "SPURs," Antonio Allen and DeVonte Holloman? What about All-American CB Stephon Gilmore and his partnerAkeem Augste? Basically, the Gamecock defense will be flat-out nasty. It may need to be with road trips to Georgia, Tennessee and Arkansas.

There is no denying the talent and athleticism of this South Carolina team. The only issue is that it's South Carolina. The team of the Chicken Curse. The team that hasn't won a conference championship since 1969. The team that hasn't won 10 games since 1984! Some (maybe all) of those streaks will end, this season. That may cause a rave, like this, to break out...

Last Season: 9-5 (Lost to Florida State in Chick-fil-A Bowl, 26-17)

Key Losses: WR Tori Gurley, CB Chris Culliver

Key Returnees: RB Marcus Lattimore, CB Stephon Gilmore

Key Game: September 10 @Georgia

Prediction: 10-2 (Capital One Bowl)

13.) Arkansas- There is nothing wrong with being Ringo Starr. With superteams Alabama and LSU in their own division, the Hogs may be forced to be the drummer and not the front man in the SEC West band. The Razorbacks definitely had a breakthrough year in 2010, beating Georgia, South Carolina and LSU, look for another outstanding run in 2011.

We all know Ryan Mallett could chuck the pigskin over a mountain, and losing him will hurt. But, Bobby Petrino is a great college coach, and with perhaps the best set of WRs in the country and a returning RB, Arkansas will continue to be a force. RB Knile Davis had over 1300 yards last year. They also have their top 4 receivers returning with each guy having over 30 receptions, last season, led by WR Joe Adams. The season may come down to the offensive line, who return only 2 starters. Breaking in a new QB in Tyler Wilson becomes even more difficult with new O-Lineman...in the SEC.

The defense should be solid enough to support the offensive skill, led by LB Jerry Franklin and his 100 tackles from last season. 3 out of 4 defensive linemen return including DE Jake Bequette, and his 7 sacks, as does great talent in the secondary with All-SEC performer S Tramain Thomas leading the way, there.

Unfortunately for Arkansas, Alabama and LSU are both road games, and the game against Texas A&M is at Cowboys Stadium. However, the rest of the schedule is quite manageable, with Auburn, South Carolina and Mississippi State all coming to Fayetteville. Expect the hog call to remain loud in 2011.

Last Year: 10-3 (Lost to Ohio State in Sugar Bowl, 31-26)

Key Losses: QB Ryan Mallett, LB Anthony Leon

Key Returnees: RB Knile Davis, LB Jerry Franklin

Key Game: November 25 @LSU

Prediction: 10-2 (Cotton Bowl)

12.) Virginia Tech- No team falls off the map in September and wins their conference in December better than the Hokies. However, with a schedule that scares just about no one, don't be surprised if this is finally Frank Beamer's year to get to #1.

I know, I know, they lost QB Tyrod Taylor, RBs Ryan Williams and Darren Evans, but almost everybody else returns, including WR Jarrett Boykin and All-Conference T Blake DeChristopher. Also, don't expect the drop-off at RB being too great, with RB David Wilson filling the shoes of Evans and Williams. Wilson was a dynamic player on Beamer's always strong specialty teams. It will be up to QB Logan Thomas, a former WR/TE, at 6'6" 245 lbs. to run the show. Even if VA Tech gets competent QB play, the Hokies could find their way to New Orleans.

Really, should we ever doubt/question Bud Foster's defense? Players come and go, and Virginia Tech remains one of the top defenses in the country. There is almost no questioning the back 7, with CB Jayron Hosley and LB Bruce Taylor leading the way, there. There are questions along the defensive front, though, with only 1 returning starter, DT Antoine Hopkins, he will be joined by brother Derrick along the line, and if this is a traditional Hokie D, they will find some overachievers to carry the lunch pail and continue the run under Coach Beamer and Coach Foster.

It was supposed to getting Miami (FL) that was the big coup for the ACC, but it has turned out to be VT, winning 4 out of 7 ACC championships, and the Hurricanes with 0 ACC titles. Expect to see BeamerBall at work in the ACC title game, at least, again this year.

Last Year: 11-3 (Lost to Stanford in Orange Bowl, 40-12)

Key Losses: QB Tyrod Taylor, DE Steven Friday

Key Returnees: WR Jarrett Boykin, CB Jayron Hosley

Key Game: October 8 v. Miami (FL)

Prediction: 12-1 (Chick-fil-A Bowl)

11.) Texas A&M- They are still in the Big 12, right? It would seem that the Aggies and Oklahoma State are in the same boat. Two teams with a great deal of skill trying to keep the momentum of a surprising season going and be the team to challenge Oklahoma for the Big 12 championship. Mike Sherman has gone from hot seat to comfy, swivel chair in a year. Now, with Texas trying to pull themselves off the mat, it is time for the Aggies to strike.

Perhaps it is fitting that at the home of the 12th Man, the key to a turnaround season was a guy playing out of position. QB Ryan Tannehill. Taking over a team middling at 4-3, Tannehill led the team to 5 straight wins before the Cotton Bowl loss to LSU. His leadership and low turnover rate was a huge plus for A&M. The skill definitely does not stop at QB. RB Cyrus Gray had over 1100 yards, last season and he returns to compliment Tannehill in the backfield. Almost all of the Aggies receivers return, as well, with Jeff Fuller (1066 yds. 12 TDs) and Ryan Swope (72 receptions) as the top targets. 4 out of 5 starters return along the offensive line, too.

There is obviously a huge hole on defense, as the Ags lose all-everything LB Von Miller to the NFL Draft, but don't expect a huge drop-off in production, as LBs Garrick Williams and Sean Porter back to lead the revamped Wrecking Crew. All four starters return in the secondary, led by CB Coryell Judie. 2 out of the 3 down lineman return for the Aggies, as well. While it won't be the Dat Nguyen-led squad, the Aggies ascension should continue.

So, there may be a lot of kissing amongst the Corps of Cadets and their dates, and the Yell Leaders will be gigging 'em and humpin' it often. A couple of interesting early season match-ups with Arkansas at Cowboys Stadium and Oklahoma State in College Station will let us know if the Aggies are back to stay. The road trip to Oklahoma in early November could be the de facto Big 12 title game and a National Championship elimination game.

Speaking of D. Nguyen, this seems like a long time ago.

Last Year: 9-4 (Lost to LSU in Cotton Bowl, 41-24)

Key Losses: QB Jerrod Johnson, LB Von Miller

Key Returnees: RB Cyrus Gray, LB Garrick Williams

Key Game: November 5 @Oklahoma

Prediction: 10-2 (Holiday Bowl)

We have reached the Top 10. Still no Southern Cal, Penn State or Michigan.

They should have this at-bat on the Tom Emanski drills video...

They're endorsed by Fred McGriff.

Darrell Bevell

Was it bad that I sat inside and watched replays of pre-season NFL all day, yesterday? Yeah. But hey, the Pirates let the Brewers tie the game with a strikeout-wild pitch combination. So, I guess that took my mind off of things.

What happens first? This or this?

Answer:

Ridiculous. I am waiting for the walk-off broken bat home run hit by the pitcher.

Congratulations to some dude named Keegan. He won a major championship yesterday. And for all of those people saying, "Oh, we'll never hear from him again in a major." I say, first of all, how do you know? Secondly, who cares? Any time my man Keegan is on a leaderboard of any event, the Masters or the Booz Allen, people will think, "Oh yeah, that's the guy that won the PGA, that year."

So, I don't think Keegan much cares what you think. He is holding the giant trophy. I mean that thing is huge!

Doggone It. I didn't even know it started.

This individual
won a straw poll in Iowa.

AHHHH! But hey, if they put me on the cover of Newsweek, I would likely have the same expression on my face, too...

Looks like Air Bud had a son.

No A&M to the SEC. SEC commissioner Mike Slive must read the blog.

I have no problem with the SEC trying to expand. It makes the great greater, but DON'T GO IN TO TEXAS. If they want to snatch Florida State or Clemson, and make the Florida-Florida State and/or Clemson-South Carolina game a conference game, I am fine with that, but don't go in to Texas, SEC. Make the rivalries that are the lifeblood of College Football more important. Don't break them up.

Still, you have to feel that the day where there are 4 conferences is coming fast.

Anyway, less than 3 weeks until we're teeing it up!

That makes me want to do this...

Except I would probably dance like that to the Michigan fight song.

You will not see the Maize and Blue in Numbers 20-16 in the MTA Poll, though:

20.) Iowa- I am back on the bandwagon. I had Ferentz' team playing for the National Championship, last season. Yep, they ended up in the Insight Bowl. I am not even in love with the talent the Hawkeyes have. Losing Ricky Stanzi, Derrell Johnson-Koulianos, Adam Robinson, Adrian Clayborn, Tyler Sash, Chuck Long, Merton Hanks and Alex Karras obviously won't help. Losing Johnson-Koulianos and Robinson to disciplinary reasons is a shot at a proud program that values doing things the right way.

However, Iowa could be favored in be favored in each of their first 9 games. Based on how the Hawkeyes have owned Penn State and the way they crushed Michigan State, last season, I would not be surprised at all to see Iowa sitting at 11-0 heading to Nebraska on Thanksgiving weekend. This is also the kind of season that Iowa relishes and always does well in. Much like Clemson, when expectations are high, they always struggle (ex:2010). When there are no expectations, the Hawkeyes thrive (ex:2009, 2002).

They are also not totally devoid of talent. Marcus Coker did a solid job backing up Adam Robinson, Marvin McNutt is back at wideout, and James Vandenberg did a solid job in the de facto Big 10 Championship game in Columbus in 2009. The Hawks also bring back 4 out of 5 offensive linemen.

Norm Parker always does a solid job with Iowa's Defense. DE Mike Daniels, CB Shaun Prater, and S Micah Hyde are back for what seems like their 11th season at Kinnick. If the Hawkeyes can buckle down in the 4th quarter, which was the definite bugaboo in '10 (they lost 4th quarter leads against Wisconsin, Northwestern and Minnesota), this could be a surprise National Title contender. So basically, look out.

Last Year: 8-5 (Beat Missouri in Insight Bowl, 27-24)

Key Losses: QB Ricky Stanzi, S Tyler Sash

Key Returnees: WR Marvin McNutt, S Micah Hyde

Key Game: November 12 v. Michigan State

Prediction: 10-2 (Outback Bowl)

19.) Texas- Perhaps this is theme day. Team with huge expectations, last season, bouncing back to contend, this season. Texas can't stay down for long, right? Well, we know this much, it will be a new look Longhorns coaching staff. Defensive coordinator "Crazy" Will Muschamp is off to Gainesville to coach Florida, so Mack Brown swiped Manny Diaz from the up-and-coming Mississippi State program.

UT went with an old friend to try to build the wretched Texas O, in former Burnt Orange QB, Major Applewhite. Major will share duties with Bryan Harsin, who was one of the masterminds of the great Boise State offense. So, it would seem that Texas has the coaching staff back in place, and if you look at the recruiting rankings, every year, the Longhorns would seem to always have the talent.

There are still questions at quarterback. Garrett Gilbert was thrust into the National Championship game in 2009, and he was viewed as "the future," then. But Case McCoy (you might have heard of his brother), and freshman Connor Wood have not made it easy for Gilbert to win the job, and based on Texas' O, last season, I am not sure Gilbert is the answer, either.

RBs Malcolm Brown and Fozzy Whittaker are back to assist whomever the QB is, as is WR Malcolm Williams, but it may not matter unless an underachieving offensive line can come through and improve. Texas' defense has less questions with Kheeston Randall back to anchor the d-line, Emmanuel Acho and Keenan Randall returning at linebacker and S Blake Gideon handling the secondary.

Oklahoma and Oklahoma State back to back on October will be tough. As will trips to Missouri, Texas A&M and Baylor, but Texas may be the most prideful program in the country, and Mack Brown did not just forget how to coach. Instead he brought in the aforementioned top coordinators. So I think this will be a big time bounceback/payback year in Austin.

Everyone doubted them before this game, too...

Last Year: 5-7 (No Bowl)

Key Losses: WR James Kirkendoll, DE Sam Acho

Key Returnees: WR Mike Davis, LB Keenan Robinson

Key Game: October 15 v. Oklahoma State

Prediction: 9-3 (Cotton Bowl)

18. Oklahoma State- Well, maybe all of that funding from T. Boone Pickens is paying off. The Pokes are coming off of a wildly successful, and equally surprising 11-2 season, where they discovered the new Zac Robinson (Brandon Weeden) and the new Dez Bryant (Justin Blackmon). But, it is still Oklahoma State. They had the ball in their court to win the Big 12 South, last season, and they came up short at home against the Sooners. Also, was it just a Dana Holgerson production, last season? If so, Holgerson is in Morgantown, WV, and the Cowboys may not be who everybody thinks they are.

Still, it is hard to deny the talent that Gundy has. It is rare to bring back a major award winner, but Okie State has Biletnikoff winner, WR Justin Blackmon, a QB in Brandon Weeden who had a 4-1 TD-INT ratio, RB Jeremy Smith who chipped in 7 TDs, and RB Joseph Randle who was 2nd on the team in rushing. With all of the points that OSU will likely put up on offense, their defense looks solid enough to win enough 40-30-type games. S Markelle Martin is an All-America candidate in the secondary, Richetti Jones and Jaime Blatnick are great edge rushers at DE, and LB Shaun Lewis is coming off a sold freshman year.

In the end, there is just a mental block on my end. I cannot picture Oklahoma State rising higher than Oklahoma, Texas or even Texas A&M, this season. Still, if I need any convincing, I should just look to the head coach for guidance.

Last Season: 11-2 (Beat Arizona in Alamo Bowl, 36-10)

Key Losses: RB Kendall Hunter, LB Orie Lemon

Key Returnees: WR Justin Blackmon, S Markelle Martin

Key Game: September 24 @Texas A&M

Prediction: 9-3 (Alamo Bowl)

17.) Texas Christian- Going to go out on a limb, here again, and say that they won't finish with the same record they had in 2010. The Frogs may fall, but they won't fall far. Gary Patterson is way too good of a coach to let that happen. Nobody takes average or slightly above average talent and gets more out of them than Patterson. However, they may go through a season of reloading, this season, much like what Boise may face in 2012.

Andy Dalton is gone. As is his red hair. Jeremy Kerley is gone. As is Jimmy Young and Bart Johnson. But RB Ed Wesley is no slouch, and the guy who actually led the team in receiving yards, WR Josh Boyce is back as well, and keep an eye on WR Skye Dawson, who may be the next Kerley. The season may come down to the offensive line and how they protect the new QB, Casey Pachall.

Still, it may not matter how many points the Frogs score because the defense will be strong. Again. LBs Tank Carder and Tanner Brock were guys that nobody (especially the Badgers) knew until the Rose Bowl. Now Carder, Brock, Stansly Maponga and Greg McCoy are being touted like the '85 Bears. Maybe because they are. In TCU's last 9 games, they gave up more than 20 points only once. So, basically, Mr. Pachall, get to 20, and we win.

There are few more intriguing games this season than the November 12 game between TCU and Boise on the blue field. To me, Boise is impossible to beat at home, and I think that will continue, but the Frogs will definitely fall off the map. Not when your punter tips the scales at 280 lbs.

Last Year: 13-0 (Beat Wisconsin in Rose Bowl, 21-19)

Key Losses: QB Andy Dalton, DE Wayne Daniels

Key Returnees: RB Ed Wesley, LB Tank Carder

Key Game: November 12 @Boise State

Prediction: 10-2 (Las Vegas Bowl)

16. Ohio State- So, here they are. Nobody, but nobody, had as tumultuous of an off-season as the Buckeyes. They went from basking in the glow of beating a real, actual SEC team in a BCS game to having their coach resign in disgrace and their do-it-all, lightning rod quarterback run away, too. Maybe they should bring back John Cooper and Stanley Jackson to fill in. No program in the country gets under the skin of so many quite like OSU (at least now that Notre Dame has become a national afterthought). So, everybody has be having fun at Ohio State's expense.

Here is the problem, though. Now, instead of being head and shoulders above their Big 10 brethren, now Ohio State is just head above the Big 10. They are still super-talented, and until someone in the Big 10 can actually prove they can beat the Buckeyes, they remain one of the safest bets in the country.

Just remember the name Braxton Miller. As soon as you think Terrelle Pryor has walked out the door, in walks a new Pryor in Mr. Miller. The only problem is that Ohio State is still a very old school program, (remember Todd Boeckman starting over Pryor?) and nobody will be surprised if Joe Bauserman gets the start on opening day.

While Pryor is the biggest fish amongst those suspended, make no mistake that not having DeVier Posey, Dan Herron, and Mike Adams for 5 games will hurt the Buckeyes perhaps even moreso. But, as has been discussed ad nauseum, Ohio State may only be tested in 1 or 2 of those games. It will be hard to just drop these guys in on the road against Nebraska in the first game that they are eligible, but I still have a hard time seeing THE Ohio State University sliding that far.

The defense does not return a ton, losing their top 4 tacklers. However, new head coach Luke Fickell is a defensive guy, and Jim Heacock coached Jack Tatum and Jim Stillwagon in Columbus, I believe. The defensive line brings back solid ends, Nathan Williams and John Simon. LBs Etienne Sabino and Andrew Sweat also return on the front 7. The secondary is much more of a question mark bring back only Orhian Johnson. But it is still the Big 10 where they are only coming around to the forward pass. So, don't look for much of a drop-off, there.

Ultimately, if Ohio State can make it out of the 5 game cloud that they are under to start the season, this could still be a team that wins the Big 10 (again).

Last Year: 12-1 (Beat Arkansas in Sugar Bowl, 31-26)

Key Losses: QB Terrelle Pryor, LB Brian Rolle

Key Returnees: C Mike Brewster, DE Nathan Williams

Key Game: October 8 @ Nebraska

Prediction: 10-2 (Capital One Bowl)

So, we are halfway through the list. Any questions or concerns? If so, my answer will be "turkey."

Tony Mandarich

Here I am again...Naturally...

What would my total blogger rating be??

I can just hear my man, Gruden, saying, "This guy...he's as smart as a set of encyclopedias."

As in, me eating cheeseburgers is "isolated..."

This would be bad for the College game.

How is it that we can split up two huge rivals in a state that breathes football. If the Big 12 came close to ending, last year, when Nebraska left for the Big 10, and Colorado left for the Pac-12, this would be it. Soon, Oklahoma and Texas may go and just be a conference on their own.

The NFL preseason started last night. This was my reaction:

I watched the Eagles-Ravens game. Saw some guys I recognized. Tyrod Taylor looked OK. Jaiquawn Jarrett had a pick. (Go TU!) It was nice to see the pigskin getting hurled around, but the real stuff comes 3 weeks from tomorrow.

While watching preseason NFL is sometimes a struggle. It is better than this.

Chad, I too will be looking for a place soon
. Maybe we could split a place, split the utilities, etc...

It's rare that Indiana Hoosier football is interesting, but Kevin Wilson has certainly spiced things up. First he signed a top QB in this year's recruiting class. Then there's this...

Get 'em coach. I doubt Cam Cameron or Bill Lynch would have stood up for IU like that.

With that in mind, here are numbers 25-21 in the MTA Poll:

25.) Miami (FL)- Once again, perhaps it is my wild amount of man love for a head coach that leads me to believe that his team will be a little bit better than they actually will be. Al Golden performed a miracle at my alma mater, Temple, and I think highly of him for it. Now, he is no Clint Hurdle in my book, but still...He coaxed the ultimate dead end job into a job at the U. Can you say jump in talent level?

Still though, how high the 'Canes can rise depends on the QB spot. Jacory Harris has been impressive at times and a space cadet at other times. Stephen Morris has added a bit more spice to Miami's O, but his TD-INT ratio is not much better. Losing Leonard Hankerson will hurt, but Travis Benjamin is a solid playmaker and if Lamar Miller can provide a running game behind an earthmover like Seantrel Henderson, beware of the 'Canes

Sean Spence is a Miami linebacker in the mold of Jonathan Vilma, Dan Morgan or Mike Barrow (he's not quite Raymond Lewis, though...). The 'Canes led the nation in Tackles for Loss, and the back four is being anchored by Ray Ray Armstrong and Vaughn Telemaque. So, maybe the U can be the U again soon.

Golden and D Coordinator Mark D'Onofrio led overachievers at Temple. Randy Shannon led underachievers in his time at Miami. It won't be long until the 'Canes-'Noles game is like this again...

Last Year: 7-6 (lost to Notre Dame in Sun Bowl, 33-17)

Key Losses: WR Leonard Hankerson, LB Colin McCarth

Key Returnees: RB Lamar Miller, LB Sean Spence

Key Game: September 5 @ Maryland

Prediction: 8-4 (Champs Sports Bowl)

24.) Missouri- Mizzou has won 10+ games in 3 of the last 4 years. Has anyone done it in a more nondescript way? Every big win the Tigers get (Kansas in '07, Oklahoma in '10) is followed by a painful defeat (Oklahoma in '07, Nebraska in '10), and their thought of a National Championship flower and fade quickly. Gary Pinkel has still done one of the most underrated coaching jobs in the country, and MU has a lot of talent returning.

Mizzou has actually built a solid quarterback run, with Brad Smith, Chase Daniel, and Blaine Gabbert. James Franklin hopes to be the next in line. He certainly has the talent around him with WR TJ Moe, TE Michael Egnew and RB De'Vion Moore. The Tigers will need it with road trips to Arizona State, revenge-minded Oklahoma and Texas A&M.

As much as losing Gabbert on offense hurts, losing 1st Round Pick Aldon Smith may hurt the defense equally as much. There is still certainly some skill left as Smith's backup, Brad Madison will anchor the defensive front. Also returning are Zavair Gooden, who led the team in tackles, and Kenji Jackson and Kip Edwards as returners in the secondary.

The Tigers went 8-5 the last time that they had to replace a prolific quarterback with an unproven player with a lot of potential. Expect similar results from MU, this season.

Last Year: 10-3 (Lost to Iowa in Insight Bowl, 27-24)

Key Returnees: WR T.J. Moe, LB Zaviar Gooden

Key Losses: QB Blaine Gabbert, DE Aldon Smith

Key Game: September 24 @Oklahoma

Prediction: 8-4 (Pinstripe Bowl)

23.) Georgia- Well, let's see. If Georgia wins their first 2 games, they will be in the Top 10, and a definite threat for the National Championship. If they lose their first 2 games, they will likely be looking for a new coach. No pressure. Not long ago, Mark Richt was one of those teflon SEC coaches. Now, he may be looking for a job before October 1. I guess that is what happens when you go 14-12 over 2 seasons, slip below .500 last season and lose to UCF in the Liberty Bowl.

Still, this is Georgia and they reeled in another Top 10 recruiting class. One of those recruits, RB Isaiah Crowell will be counted on to be a huge contributor a la Marcus Lattimore at fellow SEC East rival South Carolina, especially with the loss of Caleb King to academic ineligibility. Oh, and what about that AJ Green guy? Yeah, he is gone, too. Still, Aaron Murray has another year under his belt at QB, he has a reliable target in TE Orson Charles, and all of the big games (South Carolina, Mississippi State, Auburn, Boise State) will take place either between the hedges or in the state of Georgia. The heavy hitters in the SEC, Alabama, LSU and Arkansas, are noticeably missing from UGA's schedule, as well...

The defense is still looking iffy, with the loss of leading tackler Akeem Dent and reliable Justin Houston. But look out for Kwame Geathers (6'6", 350). Think mini-Terrance Cody. With Geathers eating up blockers, also look for LB Christian Robinson to roam free and make plays. Look out for the Georgia Specialty Teams, as well, with a pair of All-Americans, K Blair Walsh and P Drew Butler. Ultimately, Mark Richt is a great coach, and even a split in the two opening games (Boise State, South Carolina) could set the 'Dawgs on a path to Atlanta for the SEC Championship Game.

If this were a mascot poll, though. UGA would be #1. I mean look at this guy, he's #1 in my book...

Last Year: 6-7 (Lost to Central Florida in Liberty Bowl, 10-6)

Key Losses: WR AJ Green, LB Akeem Dent

Key Returnees: QB Aaron Murray, LB Christian Robinson

Key Game: September 10 v. South Carolina

Prediction: 8-4 (Chick-fil-A Bowl)

22.) West Virginia- Perhaps no team outside of Columbus had more eventful/stressful off-season as they did in Morgantown. I can't think of too many "coach-in-waiting" situations that have gone smoothly, but what happened at WVU took it to a new level. "Awww shucks" Bill Stewart digging up dirt on a guy who was supposed to be his friend and successor? Ouch. Don Nehlen and Sam Huff would not be pleased. However, the final product may work for the best if you are a Mountaineer fan.

West Virginia won under Stewart, but there was always a sense that WVU was underachieving for the talent that they had. Now with Dana Holgorsen, the latest offensive genius in control, the Mountaineer offense may hum the way it did with Pat White and Steve Slaton (and Rich Rodriguez), even without Noel Devine. It certainly has a premier pilot with Geno Smith, who may be tailor-made for Holgorsen's offense. Veteran wideouts Tavon Austin and Brad Starks may set the stage for a Mountaineer explosion, especially in the average (at best) Big East.

Bruce Irvin may have been the best backup, at any position in the country. The animal D-End had 14 sacks and was only a 3rd Down guy! Chris Nield will be missed in the middle of Jeff Casteel's 3-3-5 defense. The linebackers are a little bit less experienced, but Najee Goode is coming off of a solid season. The back 5, anchored by multiple-year starter, Keith Tandy should be solid, as Casteel's defense always seems to be. There is a reason Holgorsen kept Jeff on board.

In the end, I think the Big East will come down to December 1 in Tampa. Going on the road to face the Bulls has been bad news for the Mountaineers in each of their last 2 visits. I think that that will continue, this season. Still, talking about WVU allows me to play one of my favorite tunes...

Last Year: 9-4 (lost to N.C. State in Champs Sports Bowl, 23-7)

Key Losses: RB Noel Devine, DT Chris Nield

Key Returnees: QB Geno Smith, DE Bruce Irvin

Key Game: December 1 @South Florida

Prediction: 9-3 (Champs Sports Bowl)

21. Clemson- Surprised? Well, one of these years, the Tigers are going to have to put it all together, right? I know, I know, no one does less with more than Clemson. But it seems that Clemson works in reverse order, when much is expected, little is delivered and vice versa. Now, Dabo Swinney's job is on the line, and he recruited that way, with the Tigers landing a top 15 class.

I don't think that many Tiger fans will be in despair over the loss of average QB Kyle Parker to baseball. Where is the great difference between E.J. Manuel at Florida State and Tajh Boyd at Clemson? Both are yet unproven with great physical skills. People are gaga over the 'Noles but doubting the Tigers. Why? I love Andre Ellington. This dude runs with bad intentions, and I think he could be the next 1st Round NFL guy from Clemson. Bringing back four Offensive Lineman should help, too.

Losing Da'Quan Bowers obviously hurts the defense, but Andre Branch may be a smaller version of Mr. Bowers. Corico Hawkins is coming off a solid season at linebacker. Though he only had 1 start, he ended 3rd on the team in tackles.

In the end, it does not much matter who is returning and who isn't, because Clemson always has talent. A three week grind of Auburn, Florida State and at Virginia Tech will likely set the road map for the season, and don't forget that Clemson had the eventual National Champions down big at halftime at Auburn.

Perhaps Coach Swinney should show this video to his team at the half and that would cure their ills.

You ready now?

Last Year: 6-7 (Lost to South Florida in Meineke Car Care Bowl, 31-26)

Key Losses: RB Jaime Harper, DE Da'Quan Bowers

Key Returnees: RB Andre Ellington, DE Andre Branch

Key Game: September 24 v. Florida State

Prediction: 9-3 (Sun Bowl)

In keeping with the game show theme. This is my favorite...

I Just Signed With the Eagles, Too!

Well, I am back, and it is back. The blog? Yes. College Football Season? Almost. So, with some coaxing from people who actually think I may know what I am talking about, it is about time that this guy starts putting his opinions/random things rattling around in his head on this blogsite.

But first, this:

Now that we have that down, let's grab a snack...

Now, who's ready for toss the football and talk about football during football season?

So, not much happened this off-season.

OK, OK, so we had some investigations, coaches getting canned, conference switches, every conference going with divisions (I guess Leaders and Legends won out over 41-14 to Florida and 38-24 to LSU). Not to mention we had Joe Paterno getting mowed down by one of his own guys. Then being seen wearing this shirt?

It looks like Joe is either got that while cutting down trees or he is ready to re-start his disco dancing days...

At least he doesn't look like this guy...

AHHHHH!!! I like my offensive mad scientists to not look like they just rolled out of bed...

However, amongst all of the filth and rigmarole, how great is it going to be when they tee it up?

While you answer that question, here are the 10 burning questions that are rattling around in my head:

10.) Who is harder to replace? Ryan Mallett or Cameron Newton?

Answer:

Look at the schedule. All those home games, last year (LSU, Arkansas, Clemson, Georgia) are road games. Michael Dyer can only do so much...

9.) Is there anything worse than a Phillies fan who did not realize that Philadelphia had a baseball team prior to 2008, but now acts like he/she has loved the team since Jim Kaat toed the slab?

Answer: Yes. The only thing worse are Phillies fans who did not realize that Philadelphia had a baseball team prior to 2008, and then rip other cities for having bandwagon fans.

8.) Should I be excited that the NFL is back?

Answer: Yes. It is like having 2 women interested in you. 1 is s-m-oking hot. We'll call her Patsy. The other is kind of hot but is still kind of average. We'll call her Lois. You are pumped that Patsy is into you, you are happy that Lois is into you, but she doesn't get your blood flowing like Patsy does.

Patsy=College Football
Lois=NFL

7.) What am I doing to beat the heat?

6.) Is the Big East that bad?

Answer: Yes. But how exciting is it that all of the teams in the conference, even Rutgers and Syracuse can go in to this season thinking they have a legitimate shot at the conference title and BCS beatdown that comes with it?

5.) Does Travis Lewis' injury hamstring Oklahoma's title hopes?

Answer: Probably but not definitely. It all comes down to if he can come back by the Florida State game, September 17. I thought it would be tough for OU to win on the road against a talented 'Noles team with revenge on their minds, in Tallahassee. Without Lewis it becomes double tough.

4.) Could America's financial situation get any worse?

Answer: No. Only if this man were President

Whatever happened to Ed Murphy? Maybe that should be my next question...

3.) Can the Pirates still win more games than they lose?

Answer: Yes. Watch this video and tell me otherwise...

2.) Why do we have 612 Bowl Games?

Answer: This is why.

1.) Who's Number 1?

Answer: Here's a few hints...

So, as the great Casey Kasem once said, "We won't stop until we get to #1, so let the countdown begin"

30.) Northwestern- Perhaps it is my vast amount of man love for Pat Fitzgerald. Perhaps it is the fact that I am a shill for the Big 10. But count me amongst the believers in the Purple, especially if "Dangerous" Dan Persa can stay upright. It may also come down to whether or not the 'Cats can finish. They had big leads against Michigan State and Penn State and frittered them both away. That was the difference between 9-4 and 7-6. Still, the 'Cats are never going to be short on effort or overachieving, which is a reflection of their head coach. Road games at BC, Iowa and Nebraska will be definite challenges, but NU is my Big 10 sleeper of the year. Still, any graduate Northwestern produces will pale in comparison to this guy.

Last Year: 7-6 (Lost to Texas Tech in TicketCity Bowl, 45-38)

Key Losses: LB Nate Williams, WR Sidney Stewart

Key Returnees: QB Dan Persa, DE Vince Browne

Key Game: October 15 @ Iowa

Prediction: 8-4 (Insight Bowl)

29.) Connecticut- For those who question the Huskies hiring of Paul Pasqualoni, I ask you, what happened to Syracuse football after he left? I know that losing Jordan Todman and Lawrence Wilson, along with the heart of the defense, Scott Lutrus hurts. I know they have no proven QB, and they will likely either go with a Freshman or a guy named Box. Still, few programs overachieve like UConn. A manageable non-conference slate will give the Huskies a chance to ease that transition.

Road trips to Pittsburgh, Morgantown and Cincinnati will be a challenge, but tell me any other spots where the school that won the arbitrary watered-down tournament they play in March will lose any other games. If you don't agree with me, let Coach Calhoun speak for me:

Last Year: 8-5 (Lost to Oklahoma in Fiesta Bowl, 48-20)

Key Losses: RB Jordan Todman, LB Scott Lutrus

Key Returnees: WR Michael Smith, LB Sio Moore

Key Game: October 8 @West Virginia

Prediction: 9-3 (Beef 'o' Brady's Bowl)

28.) Utah- The team that blazed the trail for the TCU's and Boise's of the world may find it a little bit tougher in amongst the tall trees of the PAC-12. That being said, any time you bring back 3 of your 4 top tacklers, and a multiple year starter at QB, along with a great coach who gets the most out of his team every year, you cannot sell the U of U short.

By the end of September, we may know exactly where the Runnin' Utes stand with road trips to the perennial king of the west, Southern Cal, and an early Holy War with Brigham Young. By October 1, Utah will either be riding the backroads of College Football or primed to play in the first-ever Pac-12 Title game. I fear the real Utes were the ones against TCU, Notre Dame and Boise in the Las Vegas Bowl, not the team that started 8-0.

Last Year: 10-3 (Lost to Boise State in Las Vegas Bowl, 26-3)

Key Losses: RB Eddie Wide, CB Lamar Chapman

Key Returnees: QB Jordan Wynn, LB Chaz Walker

Key Game: September 10 @Southern Cal

Prediction: 8-4 (Sun Bowl)

27.) Brigham Young- There may be no team more intriguing and fun to follow than the Y. It is a brave new world, being an Independent. Still, I think that Brigham Young can turn into Notre Dame lite in that regard because they have a national base due to their religious affiliation.

As far as on the field is concerned, so much is tied to the maturation of Jake Heaps. With JJ DiLuigi toting the rock and Cody Hoffman back at receiver, BYU should be a typical BYU offense. If BYU can find some defense and can carry over the momentum they had at the end of last season, the fighting Bronco Mendenhalls could grab another 10-win season, their 5th in 6 seasons. At Ole Miss and at Texas is a rough way to kick off the season, but how can you not get behind this guy?

Last Year: 7-6 (Beat UTEP in New Mexico Bowl, 52-24)

Key Losses: S Andrew Rich, PK Mitch Payne

Key Returnees: RB JJ DiLuigi, LB Brandon Ogletree

Key Game: September 10 @Texas

Prediction: 9-3 (Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl)

26.) South Florida- It didn't take long for the son of Dr. Lou to raise the expectations of the state of Florida's other team. Job #1 for USF is finding a way for BJ Daniels to stop being a walking turnover. No doubt the kid is exciting. He just needs to stop being exciting for the other team. Getting transfer Darrell Scott from Colorado will help. USF will always be stout on defense and this year is no different. DeDe Lattimore, Jon Lejiste and Jerrell Young will be the anchors, this season. Lindsey Lamar is a mini-Devin Hester running back kicks. In a league where there is so little difference between teams, it could be Lamar that is the difference for the Bulls in '11.

A Holtz starting the season at Notre Dame. Makes sense. That is the kind of game that sets the tone for the season for both USF and the Irish. The first two Big East games (at Pitt, at UConn) will let us know early if Skip's team are contenders or typical USF, lots of talent without much to show for it. Still, this team looked strong at the end of the year, pushing UConn to the brink and handling Clemson in the bowl game. Believe it or not, I think USF=BCS, this year. I hope that excites these gals. Yes!

Last Year: 8-5 (Beat Clemson in Meineke Car Care Bowl, 31-26)

Key Losses: C Sampson Genus, LB Jacquian Willams

Key Returnees: KR Lindsey Lamar, LB Sam Barrington

Key Game: September 3 @Notre Dame

Prediction: 8-4 (Orange Bowl)

Not a bad primer, right? Over the coming days, we'll see where everybody else lands in the world of Marty. Even if you disagree with me, please admit I have more knowledge than this lady.
